Aspiring musicians with talent and a love of early music can work with the masters again this summer.

The Aston Magna at Brandeis University Summer Music Workshops are six-day intensive laboratories for violinists, clarinetists, and oboists. Students, serious amateurs and professionals engage in private coaching, private practicing, complimentary communal lunches, informal performance in master classes, lecture/demonstrations, open rehearsals of the instructors’ concerts, and in participants’ concerts at each week’s end.

Instructors are violinist Daniel Stepner, Artistic Director of the Aston Magna Music Festival; oboist Stephen Hammer, and clarinetist Eric Hoeprich. All are or have been principal players in the Handel and Haydn Society Orchestra, and they play regularly in other groups in the United States and abroad. Both Mr. Hoeprich and Mr. Hammer are scholars in the area of their instruments, and they design and make the historical models they play on. Mr. Hoeprich recently published “The Clarinet” (Yale University Press), an exhaustive history of the instrument and its traditions. Mr. Stepner’s period instrument recording of the Bach Sonatas and Partitas (and his transcription of the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue) was released last year on the Centaur label.

Workshops are open to modern and period players. Mr. Stepner has two period violins for students’ use. Messrs. Hammer and Hoeprich also provide some historical models for students to use. All  activities take place in the Slosberg Music Center, Brandeis’ air-conditioned music building.
