Is Monteverdi Your Music Man? Join the “Monteverdi Marathon” Berkshire Weekend 20-21

The beloved music of Monteverdi opens the Aston Magna Music Festival on June 18-20, 2015, at venues near Boston, in the Berkshires and Hudson Valley. Aston Magna, the oldest summer music festival of early music, features acclaimed musicians playing period instruments.

“Monteverdi’s Warring Lovers” features Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Lettera amorosa, Tempro la cetra, and other operatic madrigals, plus instrumental works by Monteverdi’s peers Castello, Marini and Cima. The concert features return performances by soprano Dominique Labelle, and Frank Kelley and William Hite, tenors, and guest Asako Takeuchi, violin. Artistic Director Daniel Stepner, Baroque violin, leads the ensemble.

Aston Magna performances take place Thursday, June 18, 7 p.m., at Schlosberg Auditorium at Brandeis University in Waltham; Friday, June 19 at 8 p.m. at Bard College’s Olin Hall in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY, and on June 20 at 3 p.m. at the Daniel Arts Center at Bard College at Simon’s Rock, in Great Barrington, Mass. The Great Barrington concert, June 20 at 3 p.m., opens a Berkshire “Monteverdi Marathon” weekend: at 8 p.m. on June 20, the Boston Early Music Festival presents Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610, with Stephen Stubbs conducting BEMF’s own vocal and chamber ensembles with guests from Dark Horse Consort. On Sunday, June 21 at 3 p.m., BEMF presents its Chamber Opera Series production of Orfeo led by Musical Directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs and Stage Director Gilbert Blin.
